Mantel: Also referred to as the Surround. They are available in many different styles, sizes and materials. This is possibly the key piece of your fireplace and often dictates the style and material for all other components.
Back Panel: Also referred to as the slips. The purpose of the back panel is to create the correctly sized opening to accommodate the fire. Available in many different materials but if your fire is solid fuel or gas it must be made from non-combustible material. i.e., slate, granite, marble, cast iron or polished metal.
Hearth: The hearth is the place for the fireplace to sit on. If used for gas or solid fuel it must be made of a non-combustible material. i.e., slate, granite, marble or tiles. CORGI regulations state that if it is to be used with a gas fire then the hearth must be a minimum of 2" (50mm) high and extend to 12" (300mm) in front of the burning area. If it is to be used with a solid fuel fire then it must be constructed in at least three parts to allow for expansion and contraction.
Fire Opening: The fire opening is where the fire will sit. The maximum size of the fire opening is dictated by the construction of your home. It can be reduced to accomodate the type and style of fire that you want.
